WELCOME TO MY PRIVATE MUSEUM! FINE & UNIQUE ITEMS HAND SELECTED FOR THEIR RARITY & QUALITY. A TRULY RARE AND FANTASTIC ORIGINAL ANTIQUE! DEAR FELLOW LOVERS OF THE FINEST IN ASIAN ART, ANTIQUES AND UNUSUAL RARITIES FROM CHINA, THIS PHENOMENAL, RARE AND EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE AND HEAVY ALL SOLID CHINESE SILVER OF STERLING OR SIMILAR QUALITY WAS SUPERBLY CRAFTED ABOUT A CENTURY AGO WITH THE ENTIRE EXTERIOR METICULOUSLY DETAILED BY HAND WITH THE SURFACE HAVING THOUSANDS OF MINISCULE HAMMERED TEXTURED SCALES TO EMULATE THE EFFECT OF SHAGREEN (SHARK SKIN). THIS IS NOT A TINY SNUFF BOX, LITTLE CIGARETTE BOX OR SOMETHING THAT ONE KEEPS ONLY A PACK OF PLAYING CARDS BUT INSTEAD, A LARGE AND HIGHLY IMPRESSIVE TABLE BOX MEASURING 7.75 INCHES IN LENGTH, 4 INCHES WIDE AND 2&1/2 INCHES TALL. THE TOP AND ALL 4 SIDES ARE BEAUTIFULLY APPLIED WITH FINELY SCULPTED IMPERIAL DRAGONS (IN CHINESE TRADITION, DRAGONS DEPICTED WITH 5 TOES, LIKE THESE, WERE ONLY USED ON ITEMS FOR IMPERIAL OWNERS OR ON GIFTS TO BE GIVEN FROM THE IMPERIAL FAMILY). THESE INTRICATELY FORMED IMPERIAL CHINESE DRAGONS ARE EXCEPTIONAL AND IN VERY HIGH RELIEF. THE TOP IS APPLIED WITH TWO DIFFERENT IMPERIAL DRAGONS WITH EACH FLANKING AN APPLIED PANEL AS THE CENTRAL BLANK RECTANGULAR RAISED CARTOUCHE WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED FOR A PRESENTATION OR MONOGRAM BUT THE PLAQUE WAS NEVER MONOGRAMMED ALLOWING YOU TO EASILY ADD YOUR OWN OR THOSE OF A GIFTEE AS ANY GOOD JEWELER OFFERS AFFORDABLE ENGRAVING SHOULD YOU DESIRE TO PERSONALIZE THIS FOR YOUSELF OR AS A GIFT THAT WILL SURELY IMPRESS THE RECEIPIENT! THE OTHER TWO HIGH RELIEF APPLIED IMPERIAL DRAGONS HAVE THEIR HEADS AND UPPER BODIES POSITIONED ON EITHER SIDE OF THE FINGER REST, THAT’S CLEVERLY DESIGNED AS A RAISED ROUND “PEARLY” AS OFTEN DRAGONS ARE DEPICTED CHASING A PEARL IN CHINESE MYTHOLOGY. THE DRAGONS MID SECTION ARE ALSO IN RELIEF AND GRACEFULLY CURVE AROUND EACH OF THE TWO SIDES WITH THE DRAGON’S FRONT BACK FEET GRASPING THE CORNERS AND THEIR REMAINING BODY, BACK FEET AND TAIL TERMINATING ON THE BOX’S BACK BELOW THE LONG AND EXTRA STURDY HINGE. THIS EXCEPTIONAL BOX IS SO WELL MADE WITH THE SILVER BEING OF A VERY THICK GAUGE UNLIKE LESSER QUALITY WARES MADE FOR TOURISTS OF LIGHT WEIGHT SILVER SHEET. IT IS WHY THIS BOX HAS SUCH AN EXCESSIVE WEIGHTYNESS AND OVERALL STRONG FEEL. EVEN THE INTERIOR IS FINELY FINISHED WITH A RICH ROSEWOOD COLORED REAL WOOD LINER. DON’T WORRY AS THE WOOD IS VERY THIN AND ADDS LITTLE TO THE OVERALL IMPRESSIVE WEIGHT OF THE SUMPTUOUS SILVER. SPEAKING OF WEIGHT, THIS PRECIOUS PIECE OF CHINESE CRAFTSMANSHIP WEIGHS A SUBSTANTIAL 544 GRAMS WHICH IS ALMOST 1&1/4 POUNDS OF MAGNIFICENT SILVER! BESIDES THE OVERWHELMING QUALITY, GRAND SIZE, BEAUTIFUL DESIGN, ATTENTION TO DETAIL, SENSATIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP, GORGEOUS INTERIOR, ANTIQUARIAN RARITY, COSTLY SILVER CONTENT, FABULOUS WEIGHTY FEEL AND AMAZING PRECISION REQUIRED TO FORM A HINGED BOX THAT AFTER 100 YEARS STILL OPENS AND CLOSES PERFECTLY, I MUST MENTION THAT THE OVERALL CONDITION OF THIS ELEGANT MASTERPIECE IS EVERY BIT AS OUTSTANDING AS IT IS BEAUTIFUL. IT IS JUST AS ONE EXPECTS FROM A CHINESE MASTER ARTISAN SILVERSMITH WHO, UNLIKE TODAY WHERE EVERYTHING IS CAST AND MASS PRODUCED WITH LITTLE OR NO HAND WORK, HAD TRUE PRIDE IN WORKMANSHIP AND WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT THE WONDROUS QUALITY EXHIBITED IN THIS EXTRAORDINARY ONE OF A KIND PIECE. IT IS WHY I LOVED THIS SO DEARLY AS THIS WAS SO OBVIOUSLY CREATED WITH GREAT TALENT AROUND A CENTURY AGO. I DON’T KNOW HOW ELSE TO EXPRESS THE SPLENDIDNESS OF THIS MAGNIFICENT SILVER BOX THEN TO SAY THAT IT IS TRULY MAGNIFICENT. THIS HAS HELD A PRIME PLACE ON MY LIVING ROOM COFFEE TABLE FOR THE PAST 30+ YEARS. THE MOMENT THAT I SAW THIS ALLURING SCULPTED ANTIQUE SILVER TABLE BOX AND REALIZED THE DRAGONS WERE OF AN IMPERIAL DESIGN, I KNEW IT WAS SOMETHING OF GREAT IMPORTANCE THAT I JUST MUST BRING HOME FOR MYSELF TO ENJOY. IT HAS BEEN DEEPLY ENJOYED IN MY HOME EVER SINCE THAT DAY, DECADES AGO, BUT NOW, WITH MY 87TH BIRTHDAY FAST APPROACHING, I KNOW IT IS TIME FOR ME TO FIND THIS AND MANY OF MY OTHER MOST PRECIOUS HEIRLOOMS A NEW CARETAKER WHO WILL LOVE, CHERISH AND CARE FOR THEM AND ESPECIALLY THIS FANTASTIC CHINESE TREASURE. I KNOW THAT IT SHALL PROVIDE YOU THE SAME PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP, BEAUTY AND APPRECIATION FOR THE ARTS OF IMPERIAL CHINA THAT IT HAD I. IT’S TRULY A SPECTACULAR PIECE FROM OLD CHINA THAT YOU WILL CERTAINLY NOT FIND AGAIN. ENJOY & HAPPY EBAYING, BERNICE ELLEN. C1920 CHINESE STERLING SILVER ENAMEL JADE PAGODA TEMPLE FORM TEA CADDY JAR BOX. JOANIES VOTED #1 NO RESERVE ESTATE AUCTIONS TEN YEARS AND RUNNING! Hi, thank you for having a look at my auctions. Joanies is Very excited to be offering the highly important estate collection of A Abraham. The collection consists of many fine and important jades and scholarly stone objects with numerous examples spanning from the 19th century to several thousand years old. I have now been commissioned to sell the rest of the collection including many of the most important and extremely rare examples. Abraham was a highly respected Asian Arts dealer and collector that specialized in jades, beads, and archaic scholarly objects. Abraham owned the Imperial Jade shop located in the famous King Edward Hotel in Toronto until the hotel closed for major renovations in 1976, 40 years ago. Abrahams jade shop was never reopened again. Abraham kept many of his most favorite examples that are now being offered in this sale. Most of the pieces have been in storage since the shop closed in 1976 and have not seen the light of day until now! There are also a number of pieces in the collection from the highly important Sir David Percival collection, including a Huang jade pendant being offered in this sale as you will see. Much of the Percival collection is now housed in the British museum and is considered one of the finest and most important collections known. A very special once in a life-time event, and surely one of my finest and most important sales to date! Special note: Around 12 years ago I wrote an article for my customers that in my opinion at the time fine Republic porcelain works were far undervalued, mostly that of the eight friends of Zhushan and Wang Bu. I have a great interest in Chinese archaic works myself as well and have kept a keen eye on the market. I noticed around 2-3 years ago some astonishing prices were being achieved for archaic jades. Then last year with the Hatfield collection Christies offered seemed to start an even bigger surge in the demand for fine archaic jades. Even Christies sale last week in Hong Kong had a number of small archaic jade pieces that brought some astonishing amounts. This tea caddy jar has a great design and is finely handmade throughout. The jar has a beautiful celadon jade interior that is then richly decorated with silver and enamel mounts. The tea caddy jar could use a light cleaning but is otherwise in very fine condition with no damage. The tea caddy jar is a great display piece that is still very practical for use measuring 7 inches tall, by 5 inches wide. The tea caddy jar weighs 706 grams. BEST OF LUCK WITH THE AUCTIONS! All Canadian Residents will be charged HST Based on Address. We make great effort to honestly and accurately describe each item listed. Items are not returnable if it is not of the age or value you were hoping it to be, with No Exceptions. Many of the items listed are old antique pieces and in many cases over a hundred, or hundreds of years old. Small Sample of the 175+ Estate Auctions listed this week! Please Look over the pictures as they are most of my description! Feel free to send me a message if you are not 100% sure about the item! If you need more time, please feel free to send me a message! Thank you for looking! Moths are often denoted as symbols of death from cultures all over the world, and some of the resemblances between the different myths are uncanny! I talked about one of these in a past MotW. But I was thoroughly surprised when I found a similar legend from across the world in China! Qing Ming is a festival in early April where people go out to enjoy the spring weather and honor the graves of their ancestors. Theres also an abundance of moths during the festival, but they have a special place in Chinese mythology! In ancient China, it was believed that moths were actually the souls of deceased people who came back during Qing Ming to visit their loved ones. Depending on the legend, the souls either possessed the insects, or were the physical manifestation of the soul itself. This is rooted in a Taoist belief, from the Book of Transformation by Tan Qiao. The belief is that existence is dependent entirely upon an emptiness of void in the universe. Sometimes, during the festival of Qing Ming, the moths find their ways into peoples homes and land on photos of the deceased. It is considered a serious taboo to kill or otherwise disturb the moth during Qing Ming, as its believed that they are turning a former loved one away. No matter whether you choose to believe in this myth of not, its still fascinating, and there have been several creepy occurrences revolving around it! For example, in 2003, a moth landed on Yuiiko Tans family alter during Qing Ming. They let it outside, but it would always return, causing the dogs from her own house and the neighborhood to go crazy. The moth hid behind her grandfathers photo, and followed her into her bedroom. Then it was gone. Yuiikos grandfather passed away on the day she was born, and she believes it mightve been his spirit in that moth coming to visit since he never got to meet her. Alex Yeoh had a less pleasant experience. In 2007, at the end of the Qing Ming festival, an Atlas Moth positioned itself on the parapet outside his apartment and refused to leave until it died a week later. The other tenants of the building refused to disturb it, and he soon learned that two people had committed suicide from that parapet before. Of course, there is evidence to refute this mythologymoths can get disoriented and thats how they find their way into homes. As for hiding behind picture frames, they like to hide in small, dark places away from predators. Atlas Moths are naturally lazy and refuse to fly whenever possible to conserve energy for mating and laying eggs.
