It was very popular during this time period for wealthy Europeans and North Americans to have jewelry custom made and imported from China. The meticulous carving of the jadeite jade stone is an excellent example of the expertise of Chinese stonecutters. The face of the box is adorned with elegant floral accents. Traditionally, this box would have been used to store pills or snuff. To create the hollow box, repousse metalworking techniques would have been used to hand hammer sterling silver into the desired shape. Damage: Age appropriate wear. There is some scratching to the inside of the box; however, this is hardly noticeable and does not affect use. This listing is for the item only. Art Deco era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specially cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would usually take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Chinese export jewelry became popular during the late Victorian period and persisted until the 1960s. During this period, Chinese craftsmen were considered by far the best in the world. The rich and wealthy would custom-order a piece through their local jeweler, who would send the design off to China to be made and sent back to Europe. This lengthy process was very expensive, making Chinese export pieces highly desirable, then and now. Chinese stone cutters were considered some of the finest artisans in the world. They would spend years learning to hand-carve many different types of stones, and excelled in creating finely detailed pieces other artisans couldnt even hope to compare to. Their skill was so refined that they could even carve delicate stones like coral and jade. Chinese stone cutters were so talented that Victorian era European socialites would commission pieces from them, preferring the hefty price tag that came with such high quality work to the ready availability of Western stonework. It was in Chinawhere the gem-carving tradition was already thousands of years oldthat jadeite reached its peak as an important artistic medium. The first jadeite reached China in the late 1700s, and late eighteenth and early nineteenth century carvers created masterpieces that are still unsurpassed in concept, design, and technical execution. Jadeite is prized for its hardness and density and occurs in green, white, orange, yellow, lavender, red, gray, and black hues. The highest grade of jadeite is translucent and has an even color distribution. Repoussé began as an ancient metalworking technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. Examples are found all over the world; Greece, Egypt, and even the Hopewell periods in the American southeast. Reverse side hammering was also used to add detail to the front, creating intricate patterns using grooves, indentations, and channeling. The piece was then carefully polished to create a hollow, eye-catching treasure. This lengthy process was very expensive, making Chinese export pieces highly desirable, then and now. Tibetan jewelry and art is deeply symbolic. It is part of everyday life and is connected with religious beliefs and social status. Tibetan jewelry is quite beautiful, featuring large, simple designs with vibrant colors. The colors most used are bright red and blue. Tibetan silver and goldsmiths were so talented, with skills passed down through families from generation to generation, that their jewelers were believed to be one of the wonders of the Medieval world! The jewelry is made from the highest-quality silver and often features turquoise, coral, lapis and amber gemstones. Tibetans believe that turquoise and coral have healing qualities and that gemstones can provide protection and help with enlightenment. Prayer boxes come in many shapes, sizes, and materials, and are used by many different faiths, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and Judaism. These faiths would encourage practitioners to write down prayers or religious musings on a small piece of paper and put it inside the prayer box. If the prayer box was small enough, it could be incorporated into jewelry, so the prayers could be carried everywhere with the wearer. Ox Blood coral is a type of coral primarily found in the South China Sea. This type of coral features a blood-red hue and has been a staple of Chinese Stonecutters for decades. Smaller pieces are typically carved and used in jewelry, some of which was meant for the Chinese Export market. Finding large pieces of Ox Blood coral intact is a rarity, making large carvings extremely expensive to obtain. Chinese turquoise is considered a very valuable stone by the Chinese, second only to jade. In fact, Chinese Turquoise was often used to supplement or replace jade. Chinese turquoise was highly prized for its rarity and gorgeous, bright blue hues. Stones that exhibit a spiderweb matrix are quite rare and deeply coveted. Chasing is a metalworking technique that uses a nail-like tool and hammer to hand etch patterns onto a metal surface. This process creates a design that is sunk into the front of the surface using indentations, grooves, and channeling. Chasing is thousands of years old and was very difficult and time-consuming technique that is still used by metalsmiths today. Repoussé began as an ancient metal working technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. SPECIALIZING IN FINE ANTIQUE VINTAGE JEWELRY & COLLECTIBLES. These prices come from GIA recognized. THE wholesale price guide for dealers. These values do not dictate what a piece is worth. This is the price a piece would be worth if stripped down and melted to its bare materials. We have other Chinese pieces up for sale. This beautiful piece comes from the Art Deco Era! The Art Deco Era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” Era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. During the Art Deco Period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Chinese Export jewelry became popular during the late Victorian Period and lasted until the 1960’s. In a lot of ways Chinese Export jewelry fashioned what we know of jewelry today. During these period’s Chinese Craftsmen including Jewelers, Stone cutters were considered by far the best in the world. The rich and wealthy would have a piece custom ordered through their local jeweler whom was usually gifted at drawing a design to send off to contacts in China to craft and send back. As you can imagine, this was not cheap, that being said, these pieces are very rare and few have survived until today. Repoussé began as an ancient metal working technique, involving malleable silver first formed with a specially created three-dimensional mold and then further refined by hammering from the reverse side and adding detail to the front. The finished work was intricate, with grooves, indentation and channeling. It was then carefully polished as an eye-catching treasure. The chasing technique is a very difficult silversmith process when the artist uses a nail like tool and hammer to hand etch patterns within the metal work. This process was very difficult and only the best jewelers were trained in the process. There is enamel loss, please view the pictures. This box is in overall amazing condition for it’s age. The box is missing of it’s bead stands, it looks like it came off at one point. This should be an easy fix for any jeweler. This box along with the bracelets above came in a set came from a wealthy European Estate. This box features classic handmade Art Deco era craftsmanship throughout including old world Chinese Export workmanship. The silver and enamel work is some of the finest I’ve ever seen. Please when looking at the pictures use the zoom button and see the intricacy of this amazing bracelet (If you look closely you can see the hammer marks from being made by hand). We believe the box is silver plated and not solid. You can see on the bottom parts where copper appears to be showing from wear. The box is made in the repousse style and would have been hand hammered to get this intricate Village Scene motif throughout the box. On the outside of the box there are raised silver patterns with hand chased accents including along the details of the village scene. The artist would have hand painted the enamel on this gorgeous box. The colors include blue’s and purple hues throughout. This is truly a museum quality masterpiece that belongs in a museum collection somewhere. However, this once in a lifetime box and set is hitting the open market to be the crowning jewel in your collection. This box would have been intended for multi use including Cigarettes, Cigars, Jewelry Casket, Momentos, etc. The box measures 4.5″ wide by 3.25″ deep by just over 1 and 1/2 tall. Antique and Vintage jewelry is disappearing at alarming rates. Unfortunately, most of the jewelry from this time period has been lost or melted down over the years, please don’t miss your chance to own this special piece of history!
