Rare Early/Mid 20thC Chinese White Metal Case From Mill Men of Shanghai
Here I have a Rare Early/Mid 20thC Chinese White Metal Case “From Mill Men of Shanghai”. The plate on the front is engraved “Presented to Mr McCann from Mill Men of Shanghai”. Behind the engraved plate is stamped “UENWO” with some Chinese characters. The case has been intricately cast with garden, buildings and Asian figures in a variety of settings. From the 1920s to 1940s, Shanghai was a major centre of textile manufacturing and trade and expatriates from around the world worked there. I assume Mr McCann was Australian. I have not cleaned the case and the tarnish on the inside of the case points towards it having some silver content – but I cannot guarantee this. Otherwise, the case is in beautiful condition – there are no bends, warps or damage. Closed, the two parts sit together evenly. Enlarge the photos for the best visual description of condition. Where I have used the flash, this shows detail, no flash is more indicative of colour. 127mm x 76mm x 30mm deep. Overseas will depend upon destination. If you’re having a look at the stuff I sell and your interests are along these lines, then use whatever engine of searching you use to find Auspickers. I can really recommend you have a look at How Bazaar – have a search using that it should come up top of the pops. I know them well (very well) and if you been happy with the service I provide, I know they won’t let you down! Fine rare Antique Chinese Sterling Silver Enamel Moth Box. The box comes from a wealthy local estate in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Bout 3″ 1/4 Long By 1″ 1/4 Tall. Very fine silver work with great detail! Please Look over the pictures as they are most of my description! Feel free to send me a message if you are not 100% sure about the item! If you need more time, please feel free to send me a message! Thank you for looking! Moths are often denoted as symbols of death from cultures all over the world, and some of the resemblances between the different myths are uncanny! I talked about one of these in a past MotW. But I was thoroughly surprised when I found a similar legend from across the world in China! Qing Ming is a festival in early April where people go out to enjoy the spring weather and honor the graves of their ancestors. Theres also an abundance of moths during the festival, but they have a special place in Chinese mythology! In ancient China, it was believed that moths were actually the souls of deceased people who came back during Qing Ming to visit their loved ones. Depending on the legend, the souls either possessed the insects, or were the physical manifestation of the soul itself. This is rooted in a Taoist belief, from the Book of Transformation by Tan Qiao. The belief is that existence is dependent entirely upon an emptiness of void in the universe. Sometimes, during the festival of Qing Ming, the moths find their ways into peoples homes and land on photos of the deceased. It is considered a serious taboo to kill or otherwise disturb the moth during Qing Ming, as its believed that they are turning a former loved one away. No matter whether you choose to believe in this myth of not, its still fascinating, and there have been several creepy occurrences revolving around it! For example, in 2003, a moth landed on Yuiiko Tans family alter during Qing Ming. They let it outside, but it would always return, causing the dogs from her own house and the neighborhood to go crazy. The moth hid behind her grandfathers photo, and followed her into her bedroom. Then it was gone. Yuiikos grandfather passed away on the day she was born, and she believes it mightve been his spirit in that moth coming to visit since he never got to meet her. Alex Yeoh had a less pleasant experience. In 2007, at the end of the Qing Ming festival, an Atlas Moth positioned itself on the parapet outside his apartment and refused to leave until it died a week later. The other tenants of the building refused to disturb it, and he soon learned that two people had committed suicide from that parapet before. Of course, there is evidence to refute this mythologymoths can get disoriented and thats how they find their way into homes. As for hiding behind picture frames, they like to hide in small, dark places away from predators. Atlas Moths are naturally lazy and refuse to fly whenever possible to conserve energy for mating and laying eggs. Very Fine Rare 1920's Chinese Jade Enamel & Silver Art Deco Card Case / Pill Box

Very Fine Rare 1920's Chinese Jade Enamel & Silver Art Deco Card Case / Pill Box
VERY FINE RARE 1920’S CHINESE JADE ENAMEL & SILVER ART DECO CARD CASE / PILL BOX. The case has a sprung hinge & sprung catch set with small carved Chinese Jade plaque. The enamel case is unmarked other than a small makers mark on inside of case, but the case has been acid tested & tests silver. 3 inches – 7.6 cm. The little Jade plaque catch measures approximately. There’s a tiny little bruise chip to the enamel on one corner on top of box & bit of rubbing to corner on underside base of box / case showing in photos with red arrow. Originally the piece would have been gilded to the inside bottom of case. Traces of gilding are still visible but gilding is a bit worn rubbed with some staining tarnishing to inside of case. I didn’t want to clean it incase I removed what was left of the gilding. Great effort is made to accurately & honestly describe any item that is listed with many detailed photos. Items are not returnable for condition issues that have been commented on or shown in the pictures in listing or because it is not the value or age you were hoping it to be.
