Chinese Silver Carnelian Needle Case with Daoist Figure Pendant 19th Century

A hand worked low grade silver canister for holding sewing or darning needles. The case is pierced and has fish and lobster motifs. There are two carnelian beads; one of which is used to open the case. The other bead tops a pendant of Daoist figure that hangs off a hook used to attach the case to a chatelaine. The figure is gilded in gold, although much of the gilding has worn off. The case and figure have small dangling pieces of stamped metal formed to resemble blossoms. The chains and cylinder move in and out. There are no marks or labels. The needle case was not intended for export. Needle case – 2 3/8″ (5.9 cm) long x 7/8″ (2.2 cm) wide. Pendant 2 1/8 (5.4 cm) long. 10 (25.4 cm) long overall. Weighs 1.4 oz (40 g). There are no breaks, dents, or cracks. The metal has oxidized and is dark, except on raised areas, such as the figure’s nose, where it has rubbed against cloth. The figure has remnants of gold gilding, especially on the back. The large bead has some wear at the top where it attaches. A work of art and a utilitarian object. Much work went into the manufacture of this needle case. This incredible, vintage Chinese silver with gold gilt bracelet has a very, decorative chain with five 16mm carnelian cabochons prong set. Please refer to my pictures for details of this 7″ long, 0.75″ wide, preowned bracelet. You can see some gold wear otherwise in great, ready to wear condition.

Fab c1900 Chinese Gilt Silver Filigree Carnelian Moth Butterfly Bracelet

The bracelet is done in an incredibly intricate filigree style, each link with a delicate little moth or butterfly done on either side of the stone. The stones are all round pieces of rich red carnelian, with beautiful natural variation in shading and translucence. Of the seven links, five are set with carnelian while the two end links (which also make up the clasp) are decorated with a filigree design. The clasp is a tab insert style. The bracelet is stamped silver and China. This bracelet is in great condition. The stones are all securely set and intact. The bezels are a little uneven in a couple of spots around a couple of the stones, and you can see a little bit of a flatter spot here and there, but this is not a chip or damage. If you hold the stones up so light can come through, you can see that these stones were originally spherical beads drilled through the middle. But we believe these are the original stones to the bracelet and that these are not replacements for anything. The clasp is working well and closes securely. Beautifully made with a large flat carved Carnelian basket and. Yin and Yang symbol set inside the handle of the Basket, which is prong set into a silver bezel. The Yin and Yang material is either stone, crystal or glass. Under magnification they are translucent and semi translucent; each read as black and white. The Yin & Yang symbols are made in two separate sections (have some wear under magnification). Each with a subtle carved’eye’. The silver work on the top of the antique Chinese Snuff Box has beautiful intricate ornate engraved design. It compliments the Red-Orange of the Carnelian and Black & White Yin Yang motif.
