Antique Straits Chinese Peranakan Very Large Solid Round Silver Box
Rare and very large silver box, weight over 1 kilogram of silver (1010 gram). Both box and lid decorated in repose high relief depicting. The lid has the design of several peacocks (7 total) and scrolling vines. Peacock in Chinese culture signifies dignity and beauty as well as posterity. On the box body is very well crafted with various rooster designs (10 total). The roosters are presented in pair and in different design. To look closely, there seemed to be no end of imagination of the silversmith(s) who worked on this exceptional work of art. Again, scrolling vines filled the spaces between those roosters. There are many meaning of rooster in Chinese culture. But one meaning usually associated with decorative object is “LUCK” The word rooster in Chinese has the pronunciation similar to that of LUCK. This silver box could have been combined by a wealthy person or family to be given as a gift on a special occasion. Therefore those sign for prosperity and luck bringing. It refers to the silver produced by local and mainland Chinese workshop for Paranakan Communities, living in the Malay Archipelago, Indonesia and Singapore.
