Here we have an absolutely stunning carved mother of pearl box with silver mounts. I believe this box would date to around 1800 and was likely made in China. Pieces like this were often made for export to France and this one shows a scene on the top of what looks like silk merchants measuring cloth with a whole host of ships in the background waiting for export. It is of elongated octagonal form with the sides all carved with flowers and a plain mother of pearl base. Likely originally used as a table snuff box. The silver mounts have a mark right under the thumb clip but years of opening and closing have made this illegible. The quality of the cameo type carving on this box is very high, one of the best and most interesting I have ever seen. It measures approximately 4 inches or 102mm wide by 2.25 inches or 57mm deep by 1.25 inches or 32mm tall. Good condition, The structure of the box is sound, the hinge great and the lid tight fitting. The back left small panel is slightly loose when touched from the inside but this is barely worth mentioning. The big issue as you can see is the 2 cracks to the top of the piece, boxes made from this material and of this age are very often cracked so it can be forgiven. The quality of this box also lets the owner forgive such an issue. Please view the photos closely as they will tell you more than words ever could.
