4 Vintage Chinese Silver (nickel silver) & Antique Porcelain Shard. Pill or Trinket Boxes (Read History of these Boxes Below). See full description & all photos. Each is about 1.5″ x 2.25″ x 1.75 (closed box). This is an estate sale find. History : I did some research on these boxes. They became so popular, they became known as “china, ” a term we still use today for the dishes and decor pieces we save for use on special occasions. When the Chinese cultural revolution happened between 1966-76, it was illegal for the Chinese people to own porcelain vases and “china” because the communist country saw this as representative of the excess and injustice of the elite. Collectors destroyed their own pieces as well, to avoid prosecution. A family living in Beijing (Hu family) sought to preserve the history but collecting the shards. In the 1980’s, the family began making these silver boxes with floral design edging, inlaying the shards on the tops of the boxes. See all photos as they are part of description. Each piece of these shards is different from others; no two pieces are the same. The boxes were made in the 80’s and 90’s, but most of the shards are from the 1800’s. Antique Chinese Porcelain Shard Silver Plated Box with Pink Peony. Measures Approx – 5 3/4″ x 4 1/2″ x 2 deep. Weight Approx – 451.2 grams. Condition – Excellent Very Good (please see photographs). Comes with the original Description & Receipt dated 9/5/1994. The description reads as follows. This box was made in China from a shard of 18th or 19th Century porporcelain. That was destroyed in the fields by chairman Mao’s soldiers during the cultural revolution. The base is made of brass with a silver wash. Unusually larger Shard – box made with a shard of a broken antique Chinese porcelain vase or jar, fitted in a vintage silver plated copper box. Many of these images have never been seen. This is a very beautiful piece and the size as well. Hand painted with image of Peony.
