Each is about 1.5″ x 2.25″ x 1.75 (closed box). This is an estate sale find. History : I did some research on these boxes. They became so popular, they became known as “china, ” a term we still use today for the dishes and decor pieces we save for use on special occasions. When the Chinese cultural revolution happened between 1966-76, it was illegal for the Chinese people to own porcelain vases and “china” because the communist country saw this as representative of the excess and injustice of the elite. Collectors destroyed their own pieces as well, to avoid prosecution. A family living in Beijing (Hu family) sought to preserve the history but collecting the shards. In the 1980’s, the family began making these silver boxes with floral design edging, inlaying the shards on the tops of the boxes. See all photos as they are part of description.
