Antique Chinese Export Silver Box Signed MK (4746)

Measures approx 2 inches (50mm) long and 1 1/4 inches (30mm) wide. Weighs 46.2 grams. Rectangular box with hinged lid and thumbpiece in front. Unusually decorated both top and bottom. The top of the lid has a rectangular reserve, intended for the owner’s initials, but still vacant. It is surrounded by beautifully chased peonies / chrysanthemums on a stippled, textured ground. The bottom is similarl chased with flowers and foliage. The inside of the box is gilded. The inner lid is marked with an 88 or bb, maker’s mark MK and a Chinese chop mark. The mark MK was used by a maker in Canton during the 2nd half of the 19th century. A napkin ring, page 38 of the book on Chinese Export Silver, the Chan Collection, has very similar decoration to this box and is dated circa 1870. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS – PLEASE NOTE. 2 Figural Signed Chinese Export Silver Salt & Pepper Shakers Snuff Box Opium SL

Offered for your consideration is a signed pair of Chinese export small vessels. They are possibly salt and pepper shakers or meant for opium or snuff. The tops are removable. They consist of a lid and an interior screen. They date to the late 19th or early 20th century. The vessels are in overall good, as-pictured used estate condition with one top wire detached at one side. Otherwise, there is light edge wear, fine and light indentations and bends here and there, fine and light surface scratches and scuffing here and there, and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Chinese Export silver jewellery box; an addition to our collection of boxes and cases. This exceptional antique Chinese Export Silver (CES) cigarette box has a plain rectangular form. The surface of the body is encompassed with an applied, large undulating oriental Chinese dragon design, all in high relief. This antique silver box is fitted with a silver and cedar wood lined hinged cover. The upper plateau of the cover is ornamented with a further large coiling dragon design accented with impressive emanating whiskers, incorporating a circular vacant cartouche to the centre. The surface of the box and cover has a textured finish, with plain borders to each side. The body of this fine Chinese silver box retains the original cedar wood lining; by virtue of its size this versatile box could be used for a multitude of functions. The box features a solid silver base which is plain and unembellished, apart from the feature hallmarks; a solid silver base is a sign of quality. The hallmarks struck to the underside of this fine box include. Silver quality/purity mark: 85 (85 standard, 850/1000). Such fine examples with three-dimensional whiskers and sharp applied decoration are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
