Offered for sale is an antique Chinese opium box (number 214). The outside of the box appears to be made of silver. But the material could be paktong, which resembles silver (Paktong is an alloy of zinc, copper and nickel, closely resembling silver). The inside of the box is made of copper. The box was used to carry opium. Opium smoking in China began in the early 18th century and it flourished for the next 200 years. This box is most probably from the end of the 19th century.
