A traditional Chinese scholar’s ink box. Measurement – top of cover – 3 and 7/8 by 3 inches. Height – Just under 1 and 1/2 inches. I believe the outside of the box to be Paktong or Chinese Silver, an alloy of silver and copper. This is sometimes referred to as White Bronze. Silver polish works well on it. The bottom of the box is copper and there is also a copper lining. It is quite heavy. The box is in very good condition with some wear from use. The copper bottom is not even on one corner, and there is a small dent in the copper lining on one side. The cover is lightly embossed with a landscape design. In some lighting it displays a yellowish tinge. This might suggest an original gold plating.
