Qing Dynasty Chinese (Ming Style) Porcelain Box with Erotic Depiction Inside
PLEASE NOTE THAT I WILL BE UNABLE TO POST UNTIL THE 1ST SEPT BECAUSE I WILL BE AWAY FROM HOME. Qing Dynasty Chinese (“Ming” Style) Porcelain Box with Erotic Depiction Inside. This is a Wonderfully Preserved Genuine 19th Century Qing Dynasty Chinese Celadon Green and Cobalt Blue (“Ming” Style) Porcelain Keepsake Box with Erotic Depiction Inside. A nicely preserved very cute little keepsake box, splendidly preserved traditional cobalt blue on celadon green porcelain so wonderfully characteristic of late Ming/early Qing Dynasty artwork. The “Celadon Green” underglaze is one of the most celebrated styles of ceramic/porcelain glaze in the history of ancient China, originating thousands of years ago. The glaze is entirely intact, the celadon green underglaze as well as the vibrant cobalt blue, and the condition of the case is exceptionally good. Both edges of the bottom and lid have a: 1 5 mm silver trim all around; 2 Silver decoration depicting chinese dragons etc. The underside of the box has a silver plated layer with what appears to be a Hallmark (see pictures). There are of course a few minor scuffs, marks, dings, etc and the colour of silver plating and decoration as tarnished BUT can be polished if so wished. As well, there are the little blemishes so typical of handcrafted porcelain of the Qing and Ming Dynasties; warts, dimples, pimple, pits and the rims of both bottom and lid have tarnishing marks. All of the preceding almost unnoticeable and very minor, we’re just playing critic here in the interest of full disclosure. The depiction on the outside on the top of the lid is of a man in a parkland setting. There are of course the traditional depictions of foliage. Also present are (untranslated) Chinese language characters. Lift the lid and on the inside of the box, as well as the underside of the lid, there are erotic images which were very popular in nineteenth century pieces which would be regarded as personal articles. This is as close to as good as one can reasonably expect of a porcelain box somewhere between one and two centuries old. While it’s not perfect, it is about as close to it as you will ordinarily find of an authentic porcelain box like this, and there are no repairs. Of course realistically one would expect some blemishes after being used for over a century, and there are no surprises here except that there are so few blemishes. Overall it is an exceptionally attractive piece, and extraordinarily well preserved specimen of the ancient Chinese art of pottery. If you’d like an authentic antique celadon green and cobalt blue porcelain box to proudly display, you could not go wrong with this one. It is solidly shaped, nicely featured, and perfectly proportioned. You could display this one with great pride either at work on your desk or at home in the kitchen or dining room. And you could use it to hold jewelry or cosmetics or candy or coins. It would be a wonderful piece for dresser or toiletry at home, or a nice conversation piece at work. Wherever it is displayed, it will certainly generate curiosity and perhaps even a little envy! Aprox measurements are: 11 cm long x 8 cm wide x 5 cm high with lid x 2.6 cm high without lid. Condition I believe is excellent, see picture. PLEASE VIEW MY OTHER ITEMS LISTED. We use Australia Post for all deliveries. We cannot take responsibility for undelivered OR damaged items.
