CHINESE EXPORT SILVER & JADE BOX c1890 WANG HING “BENSABOTT, CHICAGO”. This is a late 19th century, one of a kind, hand crafted Chinese export silver and jade scholar’s box. Signed for Wang Hing. Imported by Bensabott Shop, in Chicago, around the turn of the century and custom fitted with Art Deco inspired jade scholar’s plaque, butterfly wings and standing elephant feet. We have found a tiny number of similar works by the shop using American silver boxes with coral and even carnelian accents, but never jade. And never with a Chinese export silver box such as this. The cover with monarch butterflies amidst royal chrysanthemum on fine hand hammered surface framing a hand carved, shaded spinach green jade scolar’s panel. The front and side with continuation of the floral work, with craftsmen from Bensabott’s shop engraving a butterfly body with applied tail and spread wings made of jade. Finished perfectly with jade elephant feet. Interior cover gold wash, interior base with slender wood panel. This one of a kind hand crafted Chinese export silver and jade. Elephant foot box is 6 1/2 inches. And weighs 18 standard ounces. Signed for Wang Hing, also stamped for the. In very fine condition. Rich silver patina, original detail. The right upper corner silver frame was folded inward. To secure the cover’s jade plaque, as shown. Likely at time of the manufacture.
