Antique Georgian Box Chinese Silver Carved Mother of Pearl Water Buffalo (4750)

Antique Chinese silver and other natural materials, such as carved mother of pearl box to hold precious items. 3 inches long; 2 1/4 inches wide. The top is a single piece of beautifully carved mother of pearl (abalone). It is set into a silver box with a hinged lid. The carving depicts a man riding a water buffalo, a popular theme in the late 18th – early 19th century. Almost as beautiful when open and see the contrast of the marbled bottom and pearly top. Very rare and exceptional piece with great workmanship and quality throughout. Not marked/signed in any way. Generally very good condition with a tiny rough patch in the natural material of the bottom, mentioned only for the sake of accuracy, but not impinging on the beauty of the piece. The fine antique late Victorian solid silver box is in very good condition for its age. The box has a wonderful Chinese carved mother of pearl panel inserted into the top. The carving is very nice. The box opens and closes fine, some slight age wear with a small gap. The box has some scratching which is quite typical. The inside of the box is relatively clean with a silver gilt finish. Very unusual snuff box. Weight:- The item is approx 53.2 grams. Hallmarks:- The item has the passant for silver. Chester assay and date letter for 1900. The makers marks are slightly rubbed but can be made out for M Friedlander & Co. Measurements:- The item is approx. 6.8cm long x 2.8cm x 2.1cm high. Chinese export mother of pearl silver framed snuff box, circa 1800 Carved in bas-relief Cantonese figural style. The lid featuring a naturalistic landscape with buildings, walled gardens, a horseman and other figures surrounded by an engraved floral border with butterfly’s. The base engraved with a similar design. The sides of the box are decorated with four panels featuring naturalistic landscape designs with buildings and dogs, the front panel with vacant oval cartouche. The silver mounts are not marked.
