Amazing Chinese Qing Dynasty Kingfisher Headdress in Shadow Box Frame
Go ahead and gasp! That is what I did–when my parents brought this museum worthy, antique Chinese headdress back home from a visit to China in the late 1980’s. Amazing detail, all accomplished with intricate wire and metal work then covered in the prized kingfisher feathers. This amazing piece is wire mounted to black velvet inside the frame and the shadow box mat is also black velvet with a gold mitered edge. The headdress measures approximately 12″x12″x 2 at the highest point. The wooden shadow box frame is has a gold finish and the mitered edging is also gold finished. It measures 21.25″X21.25″x3. In terms of imagery, there are 9 figures with charming, individualized carved heads. Each face is also hand painted. There are two dragons that are wired to float above the back support and wiggle when the headdress is moved. The woman who once wore this must have made quite a dramatic entrance! Below the dragons, I count 8 phoenix birds with highly decorative blue feathered tails. One large coral bead and one amber? Bead are found at either end of the headdress. There are also 8 Chinese symbols, each with a white jade? Bead in the center, that run 4 on either side. None of the decorative elements are missing. At this point in time the shadow box has been opened 4 times to clean the glass. Small nails need to be removed to lift the back off. Due to its unusual beauty and age, my family has tried not to disturb it much. The feathers are fragile so keeping it protected under glass has helped it remain in great condition. Sorry, no international sales. I have no control over this process. It is truly a gorgeous piece of Chinese history and I thank you for your interest. The scene is incredible with the finest of detail. We see two warriors practicing their sword skills in a large court scene. Trees are lifelike and kingfisher pieces are all quite large. The piece is framed behind glass and looks original – you can see the gold gilding remnants on the frame. Some minor enamel loss but looks to be quite complete and majority looks to be in amazing condition. This is a large shadow box and a rare and one-of-a-kind Chinese Scholar Art treasure. Museums may have some small pieces of kingfisher jewelry but rarely do you see a shadow box of this size and quality! Frame measures 25.5 inches long, 19 inches tall and 2.6 inches thick (64.8 cm, 48.3 cm, 6.6 cm). Would make a STUNNING display piece and investment, very fine addition to a rare Chinese art collection, or an extraordinary gift. One of many fine Chinese collectible arts available this week!
